According to a video posted by YouTuber video game reviewer DreamcastGuy, Square Enix is prepping to bring the HD collections of the Kingdom Hearts games onto the Nintendo Switch. As an avid fan of Kingdom Hearts and always looks for another reason to play the games, having the series on the Switch would be perfect.
From DreamcastGuy, "What my source said is that they [Square Enix] are currently deep in talks. They are very much trying to figure out if this is worth their time. Square Enix is heavily interested in bringing Kingdom Hearts III specifically to the Nintendo Switch."
As big of a franchise as Kingdom Hearts is, having it on the Nintendo Switch would finally make a lot of fans' wishes come true, including myself and few others I know who own the Switch. It's funny on the timing of this news breaking out because I recently got my girlfriend, who also happens to have the Switch, into the Kingdom Hearts saga. We played the first game together during the summer and she ended up loving it. Unfortunately, she's not able to play the rest of the collection until she gets back home from college. However, if the games were on the Nintendo Switch, she probably would have been halfway through the collection by now.
As of now, the HD collections are only available on PS4. Square Enix is currently going all in for Kingdom Heart III's release on PS4 and Xbox One in January, so Switch (and even Xbox One) owners will have to wait for some time before the games can make it onto their devices. As Dreamcast Guy said, Square Enix wants to see if it's worth the trouble, but if anything can be said about Nintendo Switch owners, it's that they buy games and Kingdom Hearts would definitely be in their (and my) preorder carts.
On PS4, the Kingdom Hearts collection file size is around 50 GB worth, almost doubling the Switch's internal 32 GB storage, so I can see Square's hesitation on how to bring these games over. Do they sell the collection and allow you to download each part of it individually? Do they include the four games on the cartridge and the two cinematic movies as downloadable content? If so, what about Kingdom Hearts III since the director even said he was worried about the game taking up too much space?
All of this and more can be answered with careful planning from Square Enix and some bold moves from Nintendo, which may include an upgraded Switch console. There's a lot to consider on the production side, but one thing is for sure - people want Kingdom Hearts on the Switch and it looks like we may see that wish come true.
For me, the idea of the entire Kingdom Hearts series being portable is too good to pass up. I'm already getting excited just thinking about playing Kingdom Hearts II on a TV, pressing pause, then switching to handheld mode to take the game with me wherever and whenever. Now that is the beauty of video games.
Thanks to DreamcastGuy's video, it's clear that Square Enix is more than interested in bringing the Kingdom Hearts series to more gaming devices, but what do you think? If you own a Switch, would you buy the KH collection on it? Leave a comment below.
Kingdom Hearts III releases on PS4 and Xbox One on January 29, 2019. Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 HD can be found on PS4.
